How wide is too wide?

Everyone wants to be noticed, when it come to beer tap handles. But at what point is a beer tap handle too big?

If you look at this picture you will see a few issues. The first one is that seven of the handles are not even facing forward. Those handles and beer companies have just lost their competitive advantage in the world of off site advertising. In many cases this is your only form of advertising and you just got push out or turned to the side.

Now, I know what you are thinking, this doesn’t always happen. Not always, but from my experience more times than not. Next time you are in a larger pub. Have a look.

There are three main reasons this happens. One, they are just too wide and don’t fit between the other taps. Two, they may fit but the bartenders knuckles are taking a beating or worse they are accidentally pouring errant beers on the floor. And three, they may just feel wayward in the hand.

We have found that any handle over 2.5” wide may have these issues. Ideally you don’t want to be over 2” wide. The depth though can be greater as it doesn’t affect the fit between the handles. But another issue arrises. Balance. We still have to make sure the centre of gravity is not so far forward that we get an accidental opening and the handle can’t be so thick that it hits the back wall.

A lot of things to think about.

Tip: One of the great ways we have found to counter act this problem is to make three sided handles. Simple solution right? No mater how it is installed the customer can see one of the logos.
